Artist Statement:
I was diagnosed with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia at the age of 9. I went through school with the constant struggle to read, write and practice math. It wasn't easy knowing my brain wasn't made to go to school. There was a never ending anxiety and depression as each assignment was handed in and graded. Sure I had accommodations and supports, but I grew up knowing my brain wasn't created for school. However, once I found my passion for teaching, I knew I went through the constant struggle, the depression and anxiety of having a learning disability so that I could find the children like me in the classroom and give them the voice I felt like I didn't have.
My graduation cap was designed to represent my challenges in school and the people who helped me get through. I had each student in my student teaching class sign it as a reminder of the first group of students I gave a voice to.
