Juxtapose

By Aimee Drew

Artist Statement:

This piece began as an unwieldy scrap from a wreath making endeavor in 2020. It was the end of a garland that would not fit to the standard form but begged to become something. I glued the ends together, followed the shape that I saw and added some dried flowers and leaves, then hung it in my window and forgot about it until a few days ago. In preparation for this show, I pulled down this old, faded piece, covered in cobwebs, and decided to expand. Fresh flowers and leaves, all harvested and dried in my home, were added, as well as foraged, rough thistles, dead fennel blooms, and dried bean pods. The piece is meant to be hung and viewed from any angle. Condrictory mediums, physical versatility and unconventionality, and the juxtaposition of a forgotten work and new inspiration, soft beauty and coarse edges, all represent the confusing, liberating, isolating, empowering, reductive, and expansive aspects of living with and learning to embrace my ADHD.
